This is a movie that got lost somewhere along the way. I imagine the revisions to the pitch went something like this:
"A superhero movie, but with a twist. It explores the loneliness that comes with being uniquely super. The pressures, and anxiety, the foibles that come to the surface when a person is confronted with being 'super.'"
Feedback from execs/creative buyers. "We love the idea. Just a couple of notes."
"A superhero movie, but with a twist. It explores what it's like to be human, yet super. And because the lead is, like, a homeless and depressed anti-hero, there's some opportunity for heart-warming comedy and 'loser makes good' development."
Feedback from execs/creative buyers. "We love the idea. Just a couple of notes."
"A superhero movie, but with a twist. It explores what it's like to be alone and super. And it's a Wil Smith vehicle. Wil and his ancient girlfriend are super powerful, like Loki from 'Mask,' and ... ummm ... somehow Wil saves a marriage that's on the rocks. AND there's a few comedy scenes at the beginning of anti-hero, and at least one or two comedy scenes of him learning to be a REAL hero and being awkward about it."
Feedback from execs/creative buyers. "We love the idea. Just a couple of notes."
"It's like Heros, but takes itself less seriously and requires less thought to follow the plot. Besides, that show has totally jumped the shark. It's like they jumped the shark, then went back in time, then jumped the shark again WHILE FIGHTING A BEAR!"
Anyway - This movie could have not been terrible if everything about it was different.
